Judges
National History Day in Colorado depends on volunteers. Please consider serving as a judge.
If you are interested in being a judge:
Requirements: We welcome community volunteers to serve as the judges for the History Day competitions in Colorado. While some sort of formal background in history is useful, it is not a requirement. The key criteria to judge are a willingness to work with youth, an interest in history, a willingness to learn and apply the rules of the History Day program, and common sense.
Time commitment on Saturday, May 5, 2012.
7:30 am - Judges' Breakfast
8:00 am - Orientation
9:00 am - Noon - Preliminary Rounds
11:00 am - 12:30 pm - Deliberation & Lunch
1:00 pm - 4:00 pm - Final Rounds
5:00 pm - Awards
-
From 5-8 hours on the day of the competition (generally starting around 8:00 a.m.), depending on whether you judge for just the preliminary round or for both preliminary and final rounds
- 2 hours of training in the week or two before the competition
In addition, if you judge entries in the Paper or Web Site categories, you will receive the entries a week or so before the competition, and should have reviewed them and written comments BEFORE the day of the competition
Training: We provide training for judges in the week or two before the competitions. We strongly encourage you to attend training, particularly if this is the first time you have judged at a History Day competition.
We also provide you with the judging instructions from National History Day. We ask you to read over the rules and guidelines for judging before the contest, so you know what is expected.
What we provide: Training, breakfast and lunch, the chance to meet young people who are excited about history, the opportunity to build connections with community members, and a HUGE thank-you!
Let us know: Which competition(s) you would like to judge (regional and/or state), whether you have a preference in terms of category (papers, exhibits, performances, documentaries or web sites) or age group (Junior division: grades 6-8; Senior Division, grades 9-12), whether you are available to judge the preliminary round only, or both preliminary and final rounds
