Volunteer Job Descriptions

As you will see, History Day in Colorado has a variety of jobs that require volunteers throughout the day that require a variety of personality types. Please let us know which jobs you would be interested in volunteering for and the preferred time of day. If you are unable to volunteer on May 1st, but would still like to help out before or after the contest, please contact our office: colorado.history.day@ucdenver.edu.

Awards Ceremony Set-Up
Location: Event Center
Hours/ People: 2 people for one shift from 4:15-4:45
Function: Help the State Coordinators to set-up for the awards ceremony by setting out special awards and medals.

Event Center Runners
Location:
Event Center Lobby
Hours/People: 2-4 people for a shift from 7:30-9:30
Function: The runners help wherever there is a need. If there are plenty of people to run the registration tables, then they can help answer questions and direct people to judging locations on campus.

Exhibit Hall Greeters/Runners
Location:
Event Center
Hours/People: 1-2 people for one shift 7:30-9:30
Function: Stay in the Event Center foyer area to keep the lines moving, keep people from stacking up, and answer questions. Be ready to help students find their interview time in the program.

Exhibits Rules Inspector
Location:
Inside the exhibit hall
Hours/People: 1 shift, 9:00-10:00
Function: Review the exhibits to note any violation of the rules (size, number of student words). If you see a rule violation, note it in your program for the Exhibit Captain to verify.

Exhibit Set-Up Assistant

Inside the exhibit hall
Hours/People: 3 people for one shift, 7:30-9:00
Function: Help students find their setup spot, tell them their interview times, let the students know the procedure for interviews.

Greeters
Location:
Outside of the Event Center (weather permitting)
Hours/People: 2-5 for 1-1 1/2 hours (7:30-9:00)
Function: The greeters helps students, parents, teachers, and judges figure out where to go. Greeters need to know the locations of the main activities (which building for documentaries, performances, etc.)
Helpful Skills: Friendly personality, welcoming demeanor

Information Table
Location:
Event Center Lobby
Hours/ People: 9+; shift times are negotiable
Function: The Information Table volunteers answer questions about things to do on campus. Encourage students and teachers to complete the evaluation forms, etc.
Helpful Skills: Friendly demeanor. Knowledgeable about Denver and the activities that students and their families may be able to do during wait times.

Judge Check-In
Location:
Outside of Tivoli 320
Hours/People: 3-4 people for a shift from 7:15-8:30 a.m.
Function: The judge check-in volunteers sign the judges in and give them their materials.
Helpful Skills: Friendly, professional demeanor

Judge Form Return Assistant
Location:

Hours/People: 4 people for 1 shift, 5:30-6:30
Function: Hand back the judges forms to the teachers (ONLY) for their students.

Judging Group Checker
Location:
Outside of Tivoli 320
Hours/People: 1-2 people for a shift from 7:15-8:30 a.m.
Function: The judge group usher has the job to match judges who have checked in with judging groups, so we can be aware when judging groups do not have enough people.
Helpful Skills: Works behind the scenes. Careful and accurate.

Judge Paperwork Assistant
Location:
In Tivoli 320
Hours/People: 2-4 people; shifts negotiable
Function: The Judge Paperwork Assistant stands in the back of the Judge Room and receives paperwork from the judges and hands out the paperwork if judges need extra forms. This person also gives the forms to the Judge Runner to take to the War Room. This person frees up the Judge Captain to handle problems. The helper on the later shift also helps clean up the Judge Room and organize all the paperwork for the History Day staff.

Judge Runner
Location:
Tivoli 320
Hours/People: 2-4 people; shifts negotiable
Function: The Judge Runner shuttles paperwork back and forth from the Judge Room to the War Room. The Judge Runner also helps clean the Judge Room at the end of the day.
Helpful Skills: Friendly demeanor. Patient to wait for forms to be ready when needed. Not chatty and easily distracted.

Merchandise Distribution
Location:
Event Center Lobby
Hours/ People: 6; shift times are negotiable
Function: Pass out the pre-packaged t-shirts and buttons that students, teachers, and parents purchased during pre-sale.
Helpful Skills: Friendly demeanor

Monitors
Location:
Various
Hours/People: 14+; shifts negotiable
Function: Maintain order in the hallways and waiting areas during judging periods. Help students find their interview rooms. Answer questions when necessary. Help Captains with clean up after preliminary or final rounds.

Participant Check-In
Location
: Event Center Lobby
Hours: 6 people for a shift from 7:30-9:00 a.m.; 2 people for shift from 7:30-10:30 a.m.
Function: The registration volunteers sign the participants in and tell them where to go for their competition.

Teacher Check-In

Hours/People: 1-2 people, 7:30-10:00
Function: The teacher registration volunteers sign in the teachers and give them their packets and evaluation forms.
Helpful Skills: Friendly demeanor

War Room Volunteers
Location:
Tivoli 329
Hours/ People: 5+ people; shift negotiable
Function: The War Room volunteers help collect the results from the preliminary round of judging and put together the heats for the final round of judging. They then help collect the results of the final round to prepare the list of winners.
Helpful Skills: Works behind the scenes. Need to be quick and careful. Calm, not excitable. Would help if they had some knowledge of History Day procedures and paperwork, perhaps by helping put together judge packets earlier in the week.
